Personality & Traits

General Overview The best way to describe Natalya is a Gopnitsa; a delinquent subculture in Eastern Europe believed to have died out by the early 2020s. Natalya can more often than not be found squatting down munching on semechki (sunflower seeds) and drinking her homemade Slavic beverages on duty and vodka off duty. If you've ever tripped over someone, it was likely Natalya.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
+Capable security officer
+Problem solver

Weaknesses:
-Tends to do things "her way"
-Resents authority figures trying to tell her what to do
Ambitions Natalya's ambitions are just to be successful at something. She gave up the gopnitsa lifestyle over a decade ago and then tried to get a Slavic restaurant off the ground, which failed, and now, at her cousin's suggestion, she is in Starfleet, hoping it will go better.

Personal History Natalya was born March 30, 2234 in Kyiv, Ukraine on Earth, the only child of Boris and Sanya Chornovil. For as long as Natalya could remember; every February 24, she and her family would visit the war memorial in Kyiv and pay their respects to the Ukrainians who perished in World War III.

As a teenager, Natalya got involved with the "wrong crowd." When she was 16, she took a trip with several of her peers which she probably shouldn't have trusted into the Chernobyl exclusion zone. On that trip, Natalya and her rather sketchy friends formed a delinquent gang, and for the next four years, Natalya lived the high life, often getting into shootouts with law enforcement or other gangs.

When Natalya was 18, during one of these shootouts, a member of the gang whom Natalya had grown close to was seriously injured. This particular incident served as a wakeup call for Natalya, and she resolved to turn her life around; leaving the gang shortly after the incident for pastures greener.

For three years, Natalya worked several dead end jobs, saving up enough to eventually open a restaurant in Kyiv serving authentic Slavic dishes in 2254. However, Natalya struggled to keep the restaurant afloat, and by early 2255, she was forced to make the hard decision to permanently close the restaurant after less than a year of operation.

Then, when Natalya seemed to be at her lowest point; her cousin. an officer in Starfleet, returned home from duty and found Natalya on a street corner, begging passersby for spare change. Lilliana brought Natalya back to the hotel she was staying at during her shoreleave and sat her cousin down to have a heart to heart, with Lilliana managing to convince Natalya to apply for Starfleet academy; an application that Natalya was quite surprised to come back approved.

And so, Natalya enrolled in Starfleet Academy on the security track. Nothing remarkable came from Natalya's Academy tenure. Supposedly, she amazed her instructors with her problem-solving capabilities, but for Natalya, it was all second nature.

Out of the Academy, Natalya was assigned to the USS Bonneville, a Starfleet ship that was by all means a garbage scow. Natalya seemed to be constantly sending requests to Engineering to fix broken things, whether it be a faulty brig forcefield or a jammed armory door. But no matter what the engineers did, things always seemed to break again. Frustrated by things never staying fixed, Natalya taught herself to repair security facilities and repair them quite well.

Natalya's ingenuity didn't go without merit, and by 2260, she had made the rank of Lieutenant JG. However, that year; the Bonneville suffered a bad plasma fire in Engineering, and though the fire was eventually extinguished, it wasn't before the fire knocked out multiple ships' systems, including the impulse engines, and they had to eject the warp core to prevent a breach.

Adrift without power or impulse engines, the Bonneville's only resort was to be towed to the nearest shipyard for repairs; most long overdue. The tow took almost a week to complete, and during that time, raw sewage began backing up into crew areas, and multiple panicking crewmembers began hording food, causing others to go hungry. That was when Natalya's Slavic cooking came into its own, as she knew how to cook delicious meals from almost nothing to serve a small army.

Once the Bonneville arrived in drydock, Natalya put in a transfer request; as the whole "poop cruise" she had just been on was enough to push Natalya to the breaking point. Natalya found herself reassigned to the USS America, a Constitution class starship, as Assistant Chief of Security.

Natalya served aboard the America for two years, earning herself a promotion to full Lieutenant in that time. As a newer ship than the Bonnevile, Natalya was pleased to have facilities that worked, and she spent her time telling her fellow security comrades the horror stories she'd experienced on the Bonneville, and to be grateful for the ship that they took for granted.

Following her promotion to Lieutenant, Natalya began to grow bored of being Assistant Chief of Security and wished to spread her wings. So, Natalya accepted a reassignment to the USS Utah to become Chief of Security of the first time. During her time on the Utah, Natalya made some of her biggest arrests in her career, as the Utah was involved in a notable 2263 bust of a major Orion Syndicate crime ring. As one of the architects of the bust, Natalya should have received a promotion to Lieutenant Commander. However, her counterpart aboard the USS Kyiv took all the credit for herself, stealing Natalya's rightful promotion.

In 2265, Natalya was called to the office of Captain Dave Sparks, the Utah's commanding officer. Sparks told Natalya that a couple good friends of his were setting up a starbase in Sector 813, and he was wondering if she would be interested in becoming the starbase's Chief of Security. Sparks promised to make it worth Natalya's while by talking to Commodore Charles Foy, the sector commander, and seeing if he could get Natalya that promotion she had been screwed out of two years earlier by the opportunist on the Kyiv.
